Spitalul Monza accredited by EASO as a Collaborating Centre for Obesity Management
From 1 July 2026, Spitalul Monza in Bucharest is part of the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) network of accredited Collaborating Centres for Obesity Management, for the period 2026–2029.

Spitalul Monza in Bucharest announced on 7 July 2026 that it has been accredited by the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) as a Collaborating Centre for Obesity Management (COM). The accreditation runs from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2029. The hospital appears in the list of centres published on EASO's website, at its Tony Bulandra Street address in Bucharest.
What an EASO COM is
EASO coordinates a European network of centres dedicated to obesity care, accredited in line with accepted European and academic guidelines. According to the hospital, the network includes more than 220 centres in 29 European countries. To be accredited, a centre must show, among other things, that it has a multidisciplinary team, follows European obesity-management guidelines and can follow patients from diagnosis through to long-term monitoring.
The centre's team
The centre is coordinated by Dr Bogdan Smeu, a senior consultant in general surgery with sub-specialist training in bariatric and metabolic surgery. Each patient is assessed by a team that brings together several specialties:
- bariatric and metabolic surgery;
- diabetes, nutrition and metabolic diseases, together with clinical nutrition and dietetics;
- endocrinology and gastroenterology;
- cardiology and pulmonology, including assessment of sleep apnoea;
- psychology.
“Obesity is a complex disease and must be treated as such,” said Dr Smeu, adding that the aim is not only weight loss but better overall health and results that are maintained over the long term.
Why it matters
Obesity is a chronic disease linked to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, and liver and joint conditions. For that reason, treatment is not limited to a single intervention. According to the hospital, depending on each case, a plan may include a full medical assessment, nutritional counselling, psychological support, medication or bariatric and metabolic surgery, followed by long-term monitoring. The right option is chosen by the medical team after assessing each patient.
